About Bacchus Marsh

A view of Bacchus MarshBacchus Marsh is a town of about 17 000 people in southern Victoria, Australia.

The "Marsh", as it is affectionately known to locals, lies about 50 km to the west of Melbourne, the capital city of Victoria. The town is about halfway between Melbourne and Ballarat, a large provincial city.

The town is easily reached from Melbourne by road or rail.

The town has a long history of agriculture, especially fruit orchards and, more recently, vegetable growing. The apple is a symbol of Bacchus Marsh.

A pleasant mix of rural and town lifestyles makes the town attractive as a place to live.

Its proximity to Melbourne makes Bacchus Marsh an ideal destination for day trippers. The surrounding countryside includes river gorges and rolling hills, ideal places to walk or cycle on sunny days.

The climate is generally mild, although very cold, frosty days are common in winter. Summer time can produce very hot days and as for elsewhere in Australia, hats should be worn when spending a lot of time outdoors.

Many of the walking tracks described on this website are easily accessible from the railway station.
